Amman

Jordan · from $100

Why visit

Amman is Jordan's bustling capital built across seven hills, offering a layered mix of ancient Roman ruins, contemporary Arab culture, and excellent museums. The city serves as a practical base for accessing Petra, the Dead Sea, and other major regional sites, but merits 2-3 days on its own for its markets, food scene, and urban energy.

Best time: October to November and March to April offer pleasant temperatures (18-25°C) without the intense summer heat or winter rain. Avoid July-August when temperatures exceed 35°C and December-January when it's cold and occasionally rainy.

Things to do
  • Explore the Roman Theatre in downtown Amman and climb to the top for city views
  • Walk through the Citadel ruins, including the Umayyad Palace and Temple of Hercules
  • Browse the multi-level Arab souk in downtown for spices, textiles, and local goods
  • Visit the Jordan Museum to understand the country's history from prehistory through modern times
  • Day trip to Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy, 45km north
  • Hike or drive to Ajloun Castle for medieval fortifications and panoramic views
  • Wander the Rainbow Street area (Jabal Amman) for street art, vintage shops, and galleries
  • Visit the Dead Sea, 50km away, for the unique floating experience and spa resorts

Food & flavour
  • Mansaf—lamb cooked in yogurt sauce with pine nuts and served over rice, Jordan's national dish
  • Hummus topped with warm chickpeas, tahini, and olive oil at a traditional breakfast spot
  • Falafel sandwiches from street vendors in downtown, wrapped in pita with tahini sauce
  • Zarb—lamb or chicken slow-roasted underground, available at weekend feasts in the city
  • Maklouba—inverted rice and vegetable casserole with meat, flipped onto a platter

3-day itinerary

A cheat-sheet you can run with.

Day 1

Roman Amman & Downtown Markets

Morning
Start at the Roman Theatre in downtown; climb to the top for orientation and views. Head to the nearby Odeum. Have breakfast hummus or falafel at a local spot.
Afternoon
Take a taxi uphill to the Citadel and spend 1.5 hours exploring the Umayyad Palace, Temple of Hercules, and Byzantine Church. Return downtown and browse the Arab souk for an hour—spices, textiles, souvenirs.
Evening
Dinner at a traditional restaurant near the souk (try mansaf or zarb). Walk Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman and grab coffee at a local café.
Day 2

Day Trip to Jerash & Ajloun

Morning
Early taxi or bus to Jerash (45km, 45 minutes). Spend 2-3 hours walking the Oval Plaza, colonnaded streets, theatres, and temples. This Roman city rivals anything in the Mediterranean.
Afternoon
Drive to nearby Ajloun Castle (30 minutes). Climb through medieval fortifications and enjoy panoramic views over the Jordan Valley. Explore the well-preserved 12th-century structure.
Evening
Return to Amman by early evening. Dinner in Shmeisani or Abdoun at a restaurant with a view, then rest.
Day 3

Art, Culture & Dead Sea Option

Morning
Visit the Jordan Museum (10am opening) to contextualize what you've seen; allow 2 hours. Explore the contemporary art scene at Darat al Funun or one of the Jabal Weibdeh galleries.
Afternoon
Option A: Relax at a Dead Sea resort spa (50km, 1 hour drive) for floating, mineral mud, and swimming. Option B: Stay in Amman, explore more of Rainbow Street, vintage shops, and lesser-known neighborhoods.
Evening
Final dinner at a rooftop restaurant with city views. Visit a shisha lounge if interested, or relax at a local café with Arabic coffee and dessert.
Practical tips
  • Use white taxis for short trips but negotiate fare beforehand, or use Uber/Careem apps for fixed pricing. Most hotels can call a taxi.
  • Dress modestly, especially in downtown and religious areas; women should avoid very short skirts or sleeveless tops in conservative neighborhoods.
  • Amman is built on seven steep hills—wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for lots of walking uphill. Taxis are cheap enough to use liberally.
  • Bring cash (Jordanian Dinar, JOD) for souks and small restaurants; cards work in malls and tourist areas. 1 USD ≈ 0.71 JOD.
  • Arabic is the main language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas and hotels. Learn a few courtesies (hello: 'marhaba', thank you: 'shukran') to be respectful.
