Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt · from $100

Why visit

Sharm El Sheikh delivers world-class diving and snorkeling in the Red Sea with direct access to pristine coral reefs and marine life that few destinations match. The town itself is compact and manageable, making it easy to balance water activities with relaxation and local culture without the chaos of Cairo.

Best time: October through April offers calm seas, clear visibility (30+ meters), and comfortable temperatures. May through September brings intense heat and occasional rough seas that limit diving conditions.

Things to do
  • Dive Ras Muhammad National Park to see soft corals, moray eels, and pelagic fish at sites like Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef
  • Snorkel from Naama Bay beach directly off shore—no boat needed for decent coral gardens and parrotfish schools
  • Take a full-day liveaboard dive trip to the Strait of Tiran for pristine deep reefs and strong currents
  • Visit the Sharm El Sheikh Museum to understand Sinai's geological and cultural history
  • Day trip to Dahab (90 minutes north) to dive the Blue Hole or explore Bedouin village culture
  • Quad-bike desert safari at sunset with Bedouin guides into the surrounding mountains
  • Glass-bottom boat tour from Old Town for non-divers wanting to see reef life
  • Kitesurfing or windsurfing at Naama Bay during peak wind season (December-February)
Food & flavour
  • Grilled hammour (grouper) at waterfront restaurants in Old Town—the local staple fish, best simply prepared with lemon
  • Koshary (lentils, rice, pasta with tomato sauce and crispy onions) from street vendors—cheap, filling, authentically Egyptian
  • Whole roasted red mullet (barbounia) with za'atar at fish markets that you can eat at adjacent restaurants
  • Seafood mezze platters featuring fried calamari, shrimp saganaki, and baba ganoush at established Old Town spots
  • Bedouin bread and lamb tajine cooked in a hole in the sand during desert experiences

Where to stay

Neighbourhoods, vibe, who they suit.

Naama Bay

Tourist hub with resort hotels, beach clubs, restaurants, and dive shops; busy and convenient but lacks authentic character

Old Town (Soho Square area)

Walkable grid of narrow streets with local seafood restaurants, small hotels, and genuine Egyptian atmosphere without resort pricing

Om El Sid

Quiet residential area south of Naama with local life, cheaper accommodations, and access to Om El Sid dive sites

Hadaba

Clifftop neighborhood with upscale resorts and sunset views; convenient for those wanting quieter surroundings with beach access

Ras Um Sid

Southern tip with excellent house reef diving steps from the shore; suited for independent divers wanting direct reef access

3-day itinerary

A cheat-sheet you can run with.

Day 1

Arrival and reef orientation

Morning
Arrive and check into accommodation in Old Town or Naama Bay. Collect dive certification card and visit a dive shop to arrange the next two days of dives.
Afternoon
Do an easy shore snorkel at Naama Bay beach or Ras Um Sid to acclimate to water temperature and conditions. Have fresh hammour at a waterfront restaurant.
Evening
Walk Old Town souk, buy some dates or local spices, and eat early dinner at a casual local spot. Rest for early dive start tomorrow.
Day 2

Red Sea diving highlight

Morning
Full-day liveaboard dive trip departing 6 AM to Ras Muhammad or Strait of Tiran. Expect 3-4 dives including a deep site (30+ meters) and shallower reef dives with strong marine life encounters.
Afternoon
Lunch and rest between dives on the boat. Surface intervals focus on marine identification and decompression safety.
Evening
Return to shore by 5 PM. Light dinner at hotel restaurant given fatigue and nitrogen loading. Early night recommended.
Day 3

Desert and departure

Morning
Quad-bike or jeep desert safari into Sinai mountains with Bedouin guides. Stop at a Bedouin settlement for mint tea and bread cooked in sand.
Afternoon
Return to town by early afternoon. Grab lunch, then visit Sharm El Sheikh Museum if time permits before airport transfer.
Evening
Depart for airport (20 minutes from most hotels). If evening flight, use remaining time for last shoreline walk or final seafood meal in Old Town.
Practical tips
  • Book dives through established operators with current safety certifications (HSE, PADI ISO)—avoid unmarked beach operators. Verify they brief comprehensively on descent rates and depth limits.
  • Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen (local shops stock harsh products) and a thin rash guard to extend bottom time without sunburn.
  • Exchange currency before arriving or use ATMs in Naama Bay; Old Town vendors accept Egyptian pounds only and give poor exchange rates.
  • Dehydration is the biggest diver problem here—drink water constantly between dives, even if you don't feel thirsty in the heat.
  • March winds can create rough seas and canceled dives—have a backup non-diving activity (museum, desert tour, day trip to Dahab) planned if booked during edge months.
